Hello!
The team at PIP is excited to share our first quarterly newsletter with our community.
As many of you know, we spent 2023 learning from and connecting with
academic leaders, students, entrepreneurs, and changemakers innovating at
Stanford University and across the global seaweed ecosystem.
We are pleased to launch the US subsidiary of Potato Productions Group
with a defined partnerships and investment strategy and are looking forward
to connecting, collaborating, and co-investing with you in 2024.
With 💖,
Sarah, Natalie & Tessa
About PIP
PIP Makes First Seaweed Aquaculture Investment
Potato Impact Partners (PIP) closed out 2023 with an investment in SEA6 Energy, participating in the Series B bridge round alongside Silverstrand Capital and Aqua-Spark. Headquartered in Bangalore, India, with operations in Bali, Indonesia, Sowmya Balendiran, Nelson Vadassery, Shrikumar Suryanarayan, and Sri Sailaja Nori co-founded Sea6 Energy with a shared vision to sustainably and ethically harness the oceans for a future independent of traditional, extractive energy sources. SEA6 cultivates and harvests seaweed through large-scale mechanized aquaculture farms and engineers innovative byproducts supporting greater food production systems.
PIP @ Stanford
Our collaborations with Stanford University connect students between the US and Southeast Asia (SEA). The Southeast Asia Forum, established by our Potato Productions Group founder, Han Shih Lee, at the Stanford Center for Human Rights and International Justice, is a student-run organization that aims to amplify
Southeast Asian voices, perspectives, and professional opportunities
through on-campus events, workshops, and speaker series.

Seaweed Aquaculture Value Chain Innovation
For every $1 invested in the $1.5T blue economy, the returns will be $5 in global benefits over the next 30 years by 2050.
PIP is kicking off 2024 with capital deployment into innovative companies disrupting the sustainable seaweed aquaculture value chain. We take a gender and impact lens to invest across all stages, sectors, and technologies addressing market failures that prevent the reliable supply and growth of high-quality, price-controlled sustainable seaweed. We also seek to improve coastal resilience for SEA communities. We partner and co-invest with blue economy champions such as Hatch Accelerator and Aqua-Spark.
DID YOU KNOW?
Seaweed is a $11.8 billion global market expected to grow 6% CAGR to $20.3 billion by 2032, with the potential to create over 40M new jobs.
Seaweed’s top 5 applications are food, biomaterials, animal feed, biostimulants and fertilizers, and nutraceuticals.
60% of global demand for seaweed and 98% of supply comes from the Asia Pacific, but 70% of $4B in investment and market leaders is concentrated in Europe and North America.
$175B is required to invest in SDG14 Life Under Water, but at $10B, it is the least funded. Failure to invest could cost $200B-$1T each year in coal protection, migration, and loss of land to rising sea levels.
Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production segment in the world with the potential to address food security challenges, but requires $150-300B in investment to expand capacity over the next 10 years.
